Baseball Meisterschaft

The 1899 Baseball Meisterschaft was the second season of professional baseball within Günsovölk. The season began on the 7th of April 1899, and concluded on the 3rd of September 1899. Rasensport Sorgenfrei retained the title, having won the inaugural championship last year.

Season Summary

Rasensport Sorgenfrei moved into top spot towards the end of May, and despite tying their record with Gelb Kekerdom or Fortuna Juemen at various points in the season they never relinquished first place to eventually finish a whopping 7 games clear of the latter following a 12-game win streak to finish the season.

Pitcher Niklas Kremer (2.73/1.19/115-31) posted similar numbers to last season to retain the Pitch of the Year Award that he won last year, whilst Sorgenfrei also saw a good year from 1B Alexander Löwe (.287/.376/.685) who tied for the lead in HRs with 26. Both players along with LF Rune Högdin (.282/.351/359) enter free agency at the end of the year leaving Wildkatzen decimated.

Fortuna Juemen improved on their 9th place finish last season to finish runners-up, 4 games clear of Gelb Kekerdom off the back of their outfielders RF Walter Müller (.314/.394/.651) and LF Marnix Bal (.335/.436/.699) who combined for 111 plated runners and 41 dingers. Unfortunately, Fortuna struggled on the mound with the team ranked just 10th in Pitching WAR, with Starters ERA ranked 9th compared to the Bullpen being ranked first. Windmuhlen also ranked last in Errors with 58.

Gelb Kekerdom’s form dropped in July having flirted with top spot before Rasensport Sorgenfrei swept them in the middle of 5-straight losses. Starting hurler Bjorn Boje (2.54/0.98/133-22) continued to be a strikeout pitcher but improved his ERA drastically to be the league leader with 2.54, as well as WAR (4.3), Strikeouts (133), WHIP (0.98) and BABIP (.265) to finish second in the voting for Pitcher of the Year. It was also the unearthing of CF Vilheim Grønkjær (.336/.394/.511), who became a mainstay in the team, that gave Falken fans lots to look forward too. The 21-year old was the unanimous pick for Rookie of the Year.

BV Küstestadt finished 4th for the second straight year, tied on wins with Ducibus BV and Viktoria Grosstadt. The Boxers could’ve finished higher if they didn’t lose their last 6 games of the season whilst Ducibus – relying heavily on Pitcher Nicholas Schupp (3.80/1.14/133-25) – and Grosstadt both won their final 6 to draw level at seasons end. The latter of the two had another strong season from last years MVP, Right Fielder Mark Sievers (.355/.399/.657). The 33-year old led the team in most major categories to finish 4th across the league in Batting Average.

Hafenstadt finished with 33 wins but have Center Fielder Cimo Straatsrat (.392/.498/.779) to thank for not losing a few more throughout the season. The 29-year old from Tapfer was phenomenal, batting in 71 and accruing a WAR of 5.7 to pick up this seasons Most Valuable Player Award. Shortstop Alfred Seidelman (.287/.336/.396) had a 22-game hitting streak end in May having started the streak last season. There was less individual standouts for Blau-Weiss Ruigoord and Mächtstadt VfL who finished 8th and 9th respectively on 31 wins. Both depended heavily on the Bullpen with Blau-Weiss leaning on Hendrich Kiesel (0.86/1.15/45-13) whilst Artilleristen were tied for 3rd in Home Runs, with 3B Giuseppe Vink (.295/.406/.551) the best all-round performer.
