Strathmiglo Wanderers Baseball Club is a baseball club located in Strathmiglo, Albaland. They are known as The Wolves or The Loggers by fans and the media and play in a rusted red jersey with orange sleeves, white pants and red socks caps. They are one of 16 teams that played in the inaugural Albaland Baseball League that began play in the 1910 baseball season.
Founded in 1903 by lumber yard workers in the west of the city as Strathmiglo Lumber Workers Sporting Club before merging with United Strathmiglo Baseball Club the following year due to lack of players. The merged club originally named itself Strathmiglo Baseball Club playing their first ever game against Athletic Club Strathmiglo, going down 5-1, before they were evicted from their home ground Argyll Park by the local government to make way for a new furniture factory. The club managed to secure use of Drymen Field – a disused plot of land to the north of the city – where they stayed from 1905 to January 1907. However, the field was soon deemed unfit for purpose with constant cancellations of games due to a water-logged playing surface.
With their first fixture in Alba Shield scheduled for March, the club hastily inspected all options, including Donaldson Park in nearby Forres, before purchasing land from the government near the logging camp of Strathie Wood where they remain to this day. Prior to their first Alba Shield fixture, the club renamed to Strathmiglo Wanderers following the lack of a dedicated home ground.
Their first nationally recognised fixture was against Oakley Wood in the First Round of the 1907 Alba Shield, which they won 5-1, before going down 6-5 to Kelton a few weeks later. The team faired little better in 1908 and 1909, eliminated in the First Round both times, with a 12-4 thrashing to Leswalt University at home in 1908 proving especially embarrassing.
Strathie Wood, now a bustling residential neighbourhood, has the Pitchers-heavy ballpark situated right on Main Street. A deep right field sees a huge reduction in home run opportunities for left-handed pull hitters severely reducing hitters potency as a result, Despite the left field being average, with 9-foot walls all around, the stadium is quite an interesting place to visit, famed for it’s Wolf Dogs: pork sausage wrapped in bacon and smothered with sage and onion stuffing as well as gravy.
