Udde 1903 is a professional baseball club located in Udde Fruktträdgård, Nihnby Island, Koana Islands. They were one of two teams who gained entry to Division Ett when the Koanian Basebollförbundet voted to expand the competition from 16 to 18 clubs for the 1917 baseball season. The team is affectionately known as the Vedhuggar.
History
Udde 1903 was initially formed as a wood chopping group by local residents to foster a sense of community and camaraderie among the inhabitants of Udde Fruktträdgård, a growing agricultural hub. Led by founding members such as Anders Rydström and Olof Bergström, the group became well known for its emphasis on teamwork and outdoor activity, bringing together people from different walks of life.
However, by 1907, many members of the group began expressing an interest in the rapidly growing sport of baseball, which had recently gained popularity in the Koana Islands. After much discussion and debate, the members of Udde 1903 officially decided to pivot from wood chopping to baseball.
After its transformation into a baseball club in 1907, it led to their involvement in establishing the Nihnby Basebollkonferens in 1908. Along with other baseball clubs from across Nihnby Island, Udde 1903 helped form the NBK to organize regular competition among the island’s teams.
The team, now led by key players such as outfielder Karl-Erik Norén and pitcher Johan Hammarström, steadily improved over the following seasons. Though they did not win any championships in the first few years, they consistently remained competitive in the league.
The turning point for Udde 1903 came in 1913, when the team won its first Nihnby Basebollkonferens championship. Under the management of Gustav Lindström, Udde 1903 established itself as a dominant force in the league. The 1913 season was marked by remarkable performances from star players such as Hammarström, whose pitching led the team to several key victories, and Norén, whose batting prowess helped secure the title. The success of 1913 was not a one-time event. Udde 1903 went on to win the NBK championship again in 1915 and 1916, cementing their legacy as one of the top teams on Nihnby Island.
In 1917, the landscape of baseball in the Koana Islands changed dramatically with the expansion of Division Ett, the highest level of organized baseball in the country. The Koanian Basebollförbundet (KBF), the governing body for baseball in the Koana Islands, announced that Division Ett would expand to 18 teams. Seeing this as an opportunity for growth, Udde 1903 applied for membership, alongside several other clubs.
After a highly anticipated vote, Udde 1903, along with SK Vattendal, was granted entry into Division Ett for the 1917 season. This marked a major milestone for the club, as they turned professional for the first time in their history. The move to professional baseball represented a significant shift for the club, which had spent its early years as an amateur team deeply rooted in the local community of Udde Fruktträdgård.
Stadium
Järnbrofält is the home of the Udde 1903 baseball club. It is situated near a large iron bridge beyond right field, which historically attracted spectators who would watch games from the bridge. Since 1963, local police have enforced a rule that spectators can only remain on the bridge for five minutes, in order to prevent overcrowding and potential accidents.
The outfield walls at Järnbrofält stand 9 feet high, making it lower than many modern stadiums. The ballpark is known for being neutral, offering no clear advantage to either pitchers or hitters.
