Sportsklubben Vattendal, normally known as SK Vattendal, are a professional baseball club located in Vattendal, Toivakka, Koana Islands. They were one of two teams who gained entry to Division Ett when the Koanian Basebollförbundet voted to expand the competition from 16 to 18 clubs for the 1917 baseball season. The team is affectionately known as the Marlins.
History
SK Vattendal was founded in 1905 as a youth organization with the aim of fostering discipline and responsibility among young people through sport, particularly baseball.
In 1907, the club decided to enter the competitive baseball scene, joining the Toivakka Basebollförbund, despite keeping their amateur status. Their debut season was a difficult one, as the team finished last in the standings, placing 12th out of 12 teams. Over the next few seasons, SK Vattendal began to show improvement. From 1908 to 1910, the team regularly finished in the middle of the standings.
The 1911 season marked a turning point for the club. Having built a solid team core, SK Vattendal achieved its highest-ever league finish, coming in third behind GK Udde Korall and Elon BF. This success coincided with the team’s transition to semi-professional status, allowing them to attract more skilled players and resources. This boost in quality set the stage for the club’s breakthrough in the following years.
In 1912, SK Vattendal reached new heights, winning their first Toivakka Basebollförbund championship. This victory marked the beginning of a dominant period for the club, as they went on to win five consecutive league titles between 1912 and 1916. During this time, SK Vattendal established themselves as one of the premier baseball teams in Koana Islands.
As the team’s success grew, so did their ambitions. In 1917, Division Ett expanded to 18 teams, offering a new level of competition. Seeing this as an opportunity to further elevate the club, SK Vattendal applied for membership to the prestigious Koanian Basebollförbundet (KBF). Their application received unanimous support, and they were granted entry into Division Ett for the 1917 baseball season. This milestone also marked SK Vattendal’s full transition to professional status.
Stadium
Opened in 1910, Diamantfält serves as the home field for SK Vattendal. The stadium is known for its unique outfield dimensions and coastal location, which significantly affect gameplay.
The left field is notably deeper than the right field, which, combined with prevailing coastal winds blowing from left field, creates a challenging environment for right-handed hitters. As a result, right-handed batters tend to perform below league averages when playing at Diamantfält. Conversely, left-handed hitters benefit from the shorter right field and favorable wind conditions, leading to above-average offensive production for lefties.
