Ny Aucklanda Idrottsförening, normally known as Ny Aucklanda IF, are a professional baseball club located in Ny Aucklanda, Wilkes, Koana Islands. They were one of the founding teams of the Nationella Basebolligan in 1897, having been the first team to be voted out of the Super Ligan at the end of the 1896 baseball season. They are affectionately known as Bergsmän (Mountain Men).
History
1892 – 1899
Ny Aucklanda IF was originally established as Ny Aucklanda Trolldom Baseboll Klub in 1892. The club was founded by local industrialist Mattis Schiele, the owner of the largest sewing factory in the Koana Islands. Schiele, an avid sports enthusiast, wanted to promote baseball and organized a group of local players to form the team. The club’s first games were informal matches against other regional teams, and it quickly garnered local support.
In 1895, the team joined the prestigious Super Ligan, the top tier of Koanian baseball. Upon entry, the club underwent a rebranding, changing its name to Ny Aucklanda Idrottsförening (Ny Aucklanda IF).
Ny Aucklanda IF’s debut season in the Super Ligan was a difficult one, finishing 9th. The team struggled the following year in 1896, finishing at the bottom, where the club was voted out of the Super Ligan in a controversial decision.
The team joined the newly formed Nationella Basebolligan (NBL) in 1897, a rival professional league, finishing 5th, 3rd and then 2nd in 1899. the NBL merged with the Super Ligan that same year, forming a new structure within Koanian baseball. The merger led to the creation of Division Ett, which would serve as the second tier of professional baseball in the country. In a historic moment for the club, Ny Aucklanda IF was voted to replace Hamnområde BK in the Super Ligan. This decision was significant, as it made Ny Aucklanda IF the only team in Koanian baseball history to be voted out of the top flight and subsequently voted back in.
1900 – 1910
Ny Aucklanda solidified themselves as mainstays in the Super Ligan, finishing as high as runners-up in 1903, four games back of Omfattandestad BoIS, but narrowly avoiding relegation 1905 campaign, when they finished 8 points clear of the drop zone in 10th, before bouncing back to 3rd the following year.
1911 – 1920
After a series of lower-half finishes, Bergsmän surprised everyone in 1911 by winning their first league title. Having finished 5th the previous year, the club’s away form (25-1-7) went a long way to aid the team to their first ever championship, bettering BK Salau who themselves had their best ever finish as runners-up.
The club repeated as champions the following year, moving to the top of the standings in mid-May halfway through a 13-4-0 record to put it beyond doubt. Ny Aucklanda IF couldn’t three-peat in 1913, after drawing 5-5 with AIF Thomassmåstad on the final day, despite leading 5-4 into the bottom of the ninth.
After a 3rd-place finish, and another runners-up performance in 1915, Ny Aucklanda IF won their third Super Ligan title in 1916, after themselves in third place for much of the year. However, an impressive run of form saw them climb the standings and challenge for the top spot, which was further boosted by Jordnot Kanjon BK’s faltering form, as the latter managed to secure just a single win towards the end of July.
Stadium
Sadaki Stadion is located in the heart of Ny Aucklanda, adjacent to the Almunge River, and serves as the home field for Ny Aucklanda IF. Due to its proximity to the river, the right field is significantly shorter than the league average, creating a batter-friendly environment, particularly for left-handed hitters. Statistics show that left-handed power hitters experience a 60% increase in home run totals at Sadaki Stadion. However, the dimensions negatively impact triples, with a 36% decrease compared to other ballparks.
The stadium features a 10-foot-high outfield wall, which allows for some incredible defensive plays, including leaping catches.
