Meopham Pirates Baseball Club, normally known as Meopham or simply The Pirates, is a professional baseball club based in Meopham, Novainsula. The club was a founding member of the of the Elite 14 in 1917 and derives its name from the Pittsburgh Pirates, of which the original owner grew up and lived in before moving to Meopham.
History
The inception of the club is closely tied to Charles Beauregard, a figure renowned for his pioneering efforts in the automotive industry. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Beauregard moved to Novainsula in 1903, bringing with him a deep-seated love for baseball, a sport that was burgeoning in the United States at the time. By the late 1910s, Beauregard had already made a name for himself by importing cars from the United States, but his contribution to the local community extended beyond his business ventures.

In 1906, recognizing the lack of recreational activities for the fishermen of Meopham, Beauregard established a baseball team initially named Meopham Friends Baseball. His involvement with the fishermen, who spent long and arduous hours at sea, highlighted the absence of leisurely pursuits available to them. Beauregard believed that baseball could offer a much-needed respite from their demanding work. “In Pittsburgh, baseball brought people together, offering joy and relaxation. I wanted to bring that same spirit to Meopham,” Beauregard once remarked, reflecting on his motivation to form the team.
1910 marked a significant milestone for the club when it was renamed the Meopham Pirates, inspired by the Pittsburgh Pirates’ World Series win in 1909. Despite engaging in regular matches against other local clubs, the Meopham Pirates remained an amateur team until significant developments in Novainsulan baseball landscape occurred. In 1914, with the formation of the Novainsula Baseball Federation, spearheaded by Johnathan Harrowood, Beauregard seized the opportunity to elevate the team’s status. He approached Harrowood, expressing a keen interest in joining the newly established federation. His request was granted, and the Meopham Pirates became one of the founding members of the Elite 14, Novainsula’s first professional sporting league, which commenced play in 1917.
The Meopham Pirates are affectionately known by several nicknames, including the Marauders and the Corsairs.
Stadium
The Pirates play their home games at Rat Harbour Ballpark, colloquially known as “Rat Harbour,” a name derived from the area it is situated in, to the west of the Meopham Entrance Lighthouse. Rat Harbour, once the focal point of the city’s fishing industry, underwent significant transformation in the late 20th century. The district was repurposed, evolving into a vibrant hub of residential areas and nightlife that now envelops the stadium.
Rat Harbour Ballpark is renowned for its pitcher-friendly dimensions, featuring 9-foot high walls that extend to 11 feet in right field, a design choice aimed at mitigating the number of home runs hit due to the shallow outfield in proximity to the right field foul pole. Right-handed hitters experience a significant decrease in home run production, attributed to the expansive left field, conversely, the ballpark sees a nearly 25% increase in triples compared to the league average.
