Ruysdael Akademisk Idrotts Förbund (Ruysdael Academic Sporting Federation in English), known more commonly as Ruysdael Akademisk or just Akademisk are a professional baseball club in Thomassmåstad, Toivakka, Koana Islands.

The club was created by Tobias Sörman on the 15th of May, 1881 as a way for locals to keep fit and engage in various sporting activities. With a vision of promoting health and athleticism, Sörman established the club in nearby Thomassmåstad, but was a passionate Ruysdael native. It is recognized as one of the oldest sporting federations in the country. The club found its spiritual home near Thomassmåstad Universitet, utilizing the beautiful grounds below a nearby hill where the university sits for their sporting endeavors.

Sörman was not only a founder but also served as the first president of the club, guiding its growth and overseeing its operations. With a strong belief in the power of sports to foster camaraderie and personal development, Sörman organized regular training sessions, competitions, and community events. His charisma and persuasive nature played a significant role in attracting interest from locals, was known for his philanthropy, actively supporting various community initiatives and advocating for improved public health and well-being.

Initially, the club focused primarily on track and field events, fostering the development of local athletes and hosting athletic competitions that drew enthusiastic crowds. In 1892, the club expanded its program to include two additional sports: baseball and polo. The newly formed programs showcased their skills at Ruysdael Stadspark, a dedicated field within the club’s premises.

By the year 1895, due to limited interest and participation, the polo segment was discontinued, with track and field events stopping by the 1930s, making baseball the last remaining program offered by the club.

The unique topography of the area contributes to Ruysdael Stadspark‘s distinct features. The prevailing wind patterns, with consistent gusts blowing from left to right, affect the dynamics of the game. As a result, both left-handed and right-handed batters face challenges in hitting home runs, despite the left field foul line being slightly shorter. The stadium’s design takes into account these wind conditions, creating an intriguing playing field that is considered pitcher-friendly.

Ruysdael Akademisk’s nickname is “Greens” for the green uniform the team uses at home.
