2006 NGC Season →
The 2005 National Gridiron Championship season was the second season of professional gridiron within Novainsula.
After the success of the inaugural season last year, the NGC signed a small television deal with broadcasters in Albaland and Zuidgelders to broadcast games on delay, with the National Final broadcast live. Regular season play was held between 3 April 2005 and 3 July 2005, with the National Final held on 10 July 2005.
The season was won by Alnwick Tigers, who repeated as North Division Champions, deafeting Soham Longfins in the Final, 48-27.

Notable Franchisees

Regular Season
The second season of the National Gridiron Championship (NGC) saw the South as one of the most hotly-contested Divisions. Tiptree, last year’s champions, had an inconsistent season, finishing 7-7. Despite a strong offense, they struggled defensively, losing key matchups that kept them from reaching the final again. Their starting quarterback, Kenny Burrows, missed two games due to injury, which contributed to back-to-back losses during a critical mid-season stretch. Halstow also finished 7-7, showing flashes of potential but lacking the consistency needed to break into the top tier. They started strong, beating Calm Bay (27-13) and Alnwick (34-29) in the early weeks, but consistency eluded them. Their offense, led by quarterback Joseph Agar, who threw for 2,508 yards and 12 touchdowns, kept them competitive in most games
Soham emerged as a dominant force in the South Division, finishing with a 9-5 record, due to a strong 6-1 record away from home. Their season was highlighted by the remarkable play of running back Everett Cone, who rushed for over 1,100 yards and added 206 receiving yards. Soham’s balanced offense, led by rookie quarterback Brent Beale, who threw for 2,326 yards and 19 touchdowns, allowed them to challenge the best teams in the league.
Soham’s defense, led by Louie Mills and Mickey Saunders, was one of the most formidable in the league, helping them secure the top spot in the South Division and a place in the National Final against Alnwick Tigers. One of the key moments of their season came in Week 8 when they defeated Tiptree 27-22 on the road.
Meopham, though competitive, finished 8-6, falling just short of playoff contention despite leading the division going into the final week. Their rushing attack, led by Pete Vian, who totaled 1,037 rushing yards and five touchdowns, was one of their strong points, but he missed a couple of games late in the season due to injury. His absence weakened their rushing attack and hurt their offensive balance, leading to close losses against Soham Longfins and Halstow Bulldogs.

In the North Divison, though, Alnwick dominated with a 13-1 record, driven by quarterback Dusty Black, who threw for over 3,000 yards and 27 touchdowns. Wide receiver Ricky Mann was a key target, making 107 receptions for 1,181 yards. Alnwick’s season was marked by a nine-game win streak and a defense that forced 20 turnovers. Their only loss came against Halstow, but they quickly rebounded and remained undefeated in the final stretch, defeating rivals like Tiptree Goldtails and Calm Bay Giants. The victory on the final day of the season against Tiptree eliminated the Goldtails slip chances of reaching the National Final, enacting revenge for last season.
Calm Bay, St Leonards, and New Lewes all had disappointing seasons, finishing with identical 4-10 records. Calm Bay, despite strong individual performances from players like Harvey Peck, who rushed for 1,046 yards, couldn’t find consistent success. Their defense struggled, particularly in the second halves of games, allowing opponents to pull away and Calm Bay dealt with multiple injuries throughout the season, most notably to their quarterback, Paul Hopkins, who missed a few games with a shoulder injury. Without their starting QB, the offense became one-dimensional, and while backup P.J. Green performed admirably, the team still struggled to move the ball effectively in Hopkins’ absence.
St Leonards, similarly, had a season filled with promise but lacked the finishing touch. They had competitive showings against teams like Alnwick and Halstow but couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities, leading to a frustrating campaign, culminating in the sacking of Head Coach Archie Murtagh.
New Lewes’ season was marked by inconsistency and offensive struggles. Despite having standout players like Regis Ratcliffe, who rushed for over 1,000 yards, they couldn’t overcome their deficiencies on defense, finishing with the second-worst point differential in the league.

The Alnwick Tigers secured a dominant 48-27 victory over the Soham Longfins at Novainsula National Stadium to avenge the loss suffered last season. Alnwick quarterback Dusty Black was named MVP, showcasing an impressive performance with 292 passing yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Alnwick’s offense was in top form, accumulating 402 total yards compared to Soham’s 333. Despite Soham starting strong with a 17-0 lead, Alnwick staged a comeback having once again gone scoreless in the first quarter.
Soham’s early lead was marked by a solid drive in the second quarter, highlighted by a touchdown pass from rookie QB Brent Beale to Shannon Morgan and a rushing touchdown by Everett Cone. However, Alnwick quickly responded before halftime, narrowing the deficit to 17-10 with a touchdown and a field goal. In the third quarter, Alnwick gained momentum with two touchdowns, taking their first lead at 23-17. From there, they controlled the game, scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter, including a pick-six by Nile Robinson and multiple big plays from receiver Ricky Mann, who caught three touchdown passes.
Despite some promising moments from Soham quarterback Brent Beale, who threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns, turnovers and key defensive plays by Alnwick, including two interceptions, shifted the game in Alnwick’s favor. Ultimately, the Tigers outperformed the Longfins in both offensive efficiency and defensive execution, securing a decisive win.
The result meant that Alnwick had won all 5 of their match-ups with Soham to this point.
