NEXT SEASON
2005 NGC Season →
The 2004 National Gridiron Championship season was the inaugural season of professional gridiron within Novainsula.
After over 12 months without a national competition since the close of the 2002 Novainsula American Football League season, the first games in the NGC were played on 10 April 2004. The competition was made up of a double round robin league stage before a National Final featuring the top team from the North and South Divisions.
Of the eight participants, two came from the Novainsula Football League: Alnwick Tigers (established 1987), and Tiptree Goldtails (1992). Calm Bay Giants had previously entered the NFL as the Eastern City Giants, but were significantly restructured and have a vastly different playing roster. St Leonards Warriors previously competed in the NAFL from 1997 to 2000.
The season was won by Tiptree Goldtails, who beat Alnwick Tigers in the National Final, 41-31, enacting revenge on the 44-30 loss they suffered at the hands of the Tigers in Week 13.

Regular Season
The league was divided into two divisions: the North and South Divisions. Teams from these divisions played 14-week schedule where they faced every team in the league home and away, before culminating in a championship game between the division leaders.
The North Division was led by Alnwick, which emerged as the top team with a regular-season record of 10-4. Alnwick’s success was driven by quarterback Dusty Black, who had an outstanding season, completing 66.1% of his passes for 2,498 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only 9 interceptions before he was ruled out with an injury in Week 12. His consistent play, combined with strong performances from the team’s running back Joseph Tilly, who rushed for 942 yards and 14 touchdowns, formed the backbone of Alnwick’s offense. Their offensive line also performed well, allowing just 32 sacks while the defense registered 42 sacks against opponents.

While Alnwick’s offensive numbers were impressive, their defense was equally up to the task. The team’s defensive stars included Gawain Hobbs, who led with 97 tackles, and Donny Hanger, who contributed with 6 interceptions. Their defense was opportunistic, forcing 29 turnovers, including 17 interceptions, which often gave their offense favorable field position.
Other teams in the North Division, like St Leonards and Calm Bay, faced more inconsistent seasons. St Leonards had an up-and-down season, finishing with a 6-8 record. They showed potential early on with a few strong wins, including a season-opening victory against Calm Bay and a mid-season win over Alnwick, but they struggled with consistency throughout the year. Calm Bay finished 5-9 on the year, led by running back Harvey Peck, who rushed for 650 yards, and quarterback Paul Hopkins, who threw for 2,700 yards.
The bottom team in the North Division was New Lewes, which ended the season with a disappointing 4-10 record, despite some strong individual performances, particularly from their quarterback Nigel McGraw, who threw for over 3,300 yards.
In the South Division, Tiptree was the standout team, finishing with an impressive 12-2 record, the best in the league. Their dominance was apparent throughout the season as they outscored opponents 398-270, showing off their well-rounded offense and stifling defense. Tiptree’s offense was led by quarterback Charles Dawson, who orchestrated a passing attack that consistently moved the ball down the field. Dawson threw for over 3,000 yards, utilizing a deep receiving corps that included wide receiver Dexter Hall, who had 10 touchdown receptions.
Tiptree’s defense was one of the league’s best, and they were particularly strong against the run, allowing only 1,142 rushing yards on the season. Linebacker Fred Conroy was a key defensive figure, leading the team with 64 tackles, while the secondary, anchored by Clyde Guilding, was known for its ball-hawking abilities, grabbing 5 interceptions throughout the season, helping Tiptree go undefeated for the first 10 weeks of the year.
Halstow, another strong team in the South Division, finished the season with a 10-4 record, tied with Alnwick for the second-best record in the league. Halstow’s offense, led by quarterback Joseph Agar, was known for its balance between the run and the pass. Agar threw for 3,118 yards and 15 touchdowns, while running back Russ Harry contributed 780 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. The Bulldogs defense was also impressive, allowing only 286 points throughout the season, the second-lowest in the league. Defensive lineman Rowan Quinn was a force, recording 9 sacks, while linebacker Gawain Hedley contributed 54 tackles and 4 sacks. Despite their strong season, Halstow couldn’t quite keep pace with Tiptree and fell short of making the championship game.
Meopham and Soham both had difficult seasons, finishing with 4-10 and 5-9 records, respectively. Meopham’s season was marked by offensive struggles, as they scored only 279 points, one of the lowest in the league. Quarterback Nicholas Eaton put up respectable numbers, throwing for 3,085 yards, but turnovers plagued the team, as Eaton threw 18 interceptions. Soham, meanwhile, managed to put together a few more wins, but their defense allowed 335 points, making it hard to stay competitive in games.
One of the most thrilling games of the season was the Week 9 matchup between Halstow and Tiptree, where Tiptree narrowly won 33-30 in a game that showcased both teams’ explosive offenses. Another memorable game was Alnwick’s Week 14 victory over St Leonards, a 23-17 win that clinched their spot in the championship.

In a high-scoring contest at Novainsula National Stadium, the Tiptree Goldtails triumphed over the Alnwick Tigers 41-31. Tiptree quarterback Kenny Burrows led the charge, earning MVP honors with 318 passing yards and four touchdowns, while Alnwick’s efforts fell just short despite a strong second-half rally. Both teams had explosive moments, but Tiptree’s balanced offense and ability to capitalize on key possessions made the difference.
The game started with a quick Tiptree field goal, followed by a touchdown, putting them ahead 10-0. Alnwick responded in the second quarter with a 6-play, 74-yard drive capped by a Max Bayliss 6-yard rushing touchdown, but Tiptree struck back immediately, with Burrows connecting for a 32-yard touchdown pass to Wes Keywood. A series of scoring exchanges followed, including a 95-yard kick return by Alnwick’s Oscar Jones to close the half with Tiptree leading 24-17.
Alnwick closed the gap with three field goals, but Tiptree regained control in the fourth quarter with a crucial touchdown from Butch Osborn and another from Dwight Stephens, widening the lead to 38-31. Despite a late Alnwick touchdown and a fumble, Tiptree sealed the win with a 40-yard field goal late in the game, securing a 41-31 victory.
Tiptree’s offense dominated with over 440 total yards and no turnovers, while Alnwick struggled with turnovers and sacks, unable to close the gap despite several impressive plays, including a standout performance by kicker Elliott Jackson.
