Masticbridge

Masticbridge Baseball Club, commonly referred to as Masticbridge, or in more recent times, St Leonards, is a professional baseball team based in the city of St Leonards, Novainsula. The team, originally known as Masticbridge Brothers, was founded in 1909. The club’s crest features a Frosted Violet flower, a symbol strongly associated with the city of St Leonards. The club was a founding member of the Elite 14 and Novainsula Baseball Federation and is the only professional baseball club in the city. They are affectionately known as the Lilacs.

History

The origins of Masticbridge can be traced back to 1909, when a group of baseball enthusiasts from the St Leonards area founded a team known as Masticbridge Brothers. Named after the Masticbridge district in the southern part of the city, the team was initially composed of local workers, shopkeepers, and students. Baseball was a burgeoning sport in the region, and the team was formed as a response to the growing popularity of the game in the city.

The early years were marked by an informal approach to the sport. The Masticbridge Brothers often played against local teams in friendly matches, mostly competing against clubs from neighboring cities and towns in the Novainsula region. Despite the enthusiasm of its players, the team faced challenges in attracting and retaining players, as baseball was still a developing sport in the area.

By 1912, Masticbridge Brothers was struggling to maintain a consistent squad. At the same time, another local team, Oceancrest Young Boys, faced similar issues. In an effort to ensure the survival of both clubs, the decision was made to merge the two teams. The merger in 1912 led to the creation of the newly consolidated Masticbridge Baseball Club. The Frosted Violet flower, which had featured prominently in Oceancrest Young Boys’ emblem, was adopted as the crest.

After the merger, Masticbridge continued to participate in local friendly games and began to grow in stature. By 1916, the team had gained a reputation as one of the more competitive baseball clubs in the region. This was the same year that the Novainsula Baseball Federation, an organization overseeing regional baseball in the Novainsula territory, was formed to regulate and promote the sport in the area.

Masticbridge Baseball Club applied for membership and was accepted into the federation, turning professional in the process. This move was prompted by a rise in popularity and financial backing from local patrons who believed in the potential of the team and the Elite 14.

Stadium

Lancaster Park is the home ballpark of Masticbridge, located in the southern suburb of Oceancrest. The outfield is irregularly shaped, with a shallow left field compared to the right. The outfield walls are 11 feet high and are covered with Frosted Violet climbing plants, a symbol associated with both the club and the city of St Leonards. Despite the odd layout, Lancaster Park is considered one of the most pitcher-friendly ballparks in the country. Left-handed batters, in particular, experience a 10% reduction in batting averages compared to the league average.
